Lisbon and the Algarve have milder winters and average around 28°C in the summer, cooled by the Atlantic breeze. Inland is hotter and drier, so head to the coast with the locals.

The Azores’ weather is influenced by the Gulf Stream giving it a mild temperature year-round (17°C in winter and 24°C summer) and perfect conditions for sailing. Madeira has a subtropical climate with winter averaging 18°C and summer 24°C, making it popular all the time.

 When to go to Portugal
Peak tourist season in Portugal is roughly from mid-June to September, except in the Algarve where it really only quietens down in the dead of winter.

Carnaval and Easter are two holidays celebrated with gusto all over Portugal and are worth going out of your way for.

 Portuguese Climate & Clothing
Climate in Portugal: Southern Portugal, including the Algarve, has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters.

Summer temperatures are high, but moderated by sea breezes.

In the north the weather is wetter, particularly in winter, and cooler, temperatures influenced by Atlantic currents and the Spanish Meseta.

The best time to travel to Portugal is during spring and autumn when days are pleasantly sunny and warm but tourist areas are relatively quiet.

Required Clothing for Portugal: Light- to mediumweights and rainwear are advised.
